The Configuration PROMs(Programmable Read only memory) are companion devices to the FPGA that store the FPGA configuration required by the user during a device power outage. The variety of storage technologies in use, including types that can be electrically erased and rewritten, makes their characterization as "read-only" devices anachronistic.
