The clock buffers and drivers are used to assist signal propagation throughout the system. While the most common function is buffering, where the signal is copied from a source to protect it from the driving load, some devices in the family have other functions such as selective re-routing of the buffered signal, dividing the signal frequency by integer value, or conversion of the electrical signal format used.
